Freed from domestic violence

"I was in an abusive relationship that lasted over five years before I was able to seek outside help. On a daily basis, I was physically abused, sometimes sexually abused. I was locked and trapped in a small enclosure, held a prisoner in my own home. I was unable to save myself and my children who endured the cruelty and the horrors of living with this abuser. I could not move without permission or speak to anyone, and I could only drink water or eat leftover food when permitted. I was not allowed to be a mother to my own children. After five long years, an opportunity came for me to escape with my children, and I took it.

I first learned about the KWA through a partner agency that I was receiving assistance from. Shortly after, I was accepted into KWA’s shelter, WAF Home, where I have been working with on-site advocates to receive advocacy-based counseling and additional services. WAF has been like an angel to me. The staff are very helpful, and everyone helps out; they are there for you for anything, whether it is day or night. WAF has supported me in my healing and with daily tasks through this difficult transition. Shortly after I entered the shelter, I was granted visitations with my child. I was so excited to see her again and to be a step closer to having her back with me, though I was afraid of what the abuser would do if he found out. The staff were there to give support and guidance through the process, as well as provide transportation to make the visits possible. It is a wonderful blessing to be able to be here, to go to classes like support group, and to have their understanding." Kiana
