Saving lives one person at a time

Cancer survivor Jewel Curtis was 48, a single mother with no job and no medical insurance and was visitingJewel Curtis Small her sister in Tacoma when she first discovered a lump in her breast. She came to the KWA Breast Cancer Navigator Program and met with Dr.Soon Ja Han. With Dr. Han’s help, Jewel was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer with chemotherapy and radiation. “Dr. Han made appointments for me and lead me to a path for treatment,” says Jewel. “When you’re vulnerable, you can hardly find the help you need. When there’s someone there to help you, it’s wonderful,” she adds.

One important thing Jewel learned from Dr. Han is that early cancer detection is key. “Early detection is the key. It’s really important. Detection and come in for treatment. I don’t think I’d be alive if I hadn’t come to KWA,” she says.
