Senior City Sustainability
The Senior City Apartment project was designed to maximize green space by providing a green roof terrace, green lawn entry terrace with seat walls that double as planter walls, and a vegetated swale. Residents have easy access to the green roof terrace as well as lots of natural light, ventilation and views.The focus of the sustainable design strategy for the buildings includes:
- Decreasing energy use
- Reducing construction waste and encouraging use of recycled materials
- Decreasing water use
- Maximizing daylighting to decrease artificial lighting needs
- Providing good indoor air quality
- Providing durable, maintenance-free materials and systems
Green Features
Below are some of the sustainable or green features included in the Senior City Apartments:
- Native landscaping and rain-sensored irrigation
- Green and white roof to decrease Urban Heat Island affect
- Bio swale on the west side to retain water on site and not into our rivers and oceans
- Electric heat pumps to cool and heat 34 apartments; saving almost 40 percent of the heat cost
- Energy star lighting
- Operable windows for cross ventilation
- Common area lighting sensors
