More Than Just a Meal

The senior meal site started in January 1988 as KWA’s first senior program. Senior meal sites provide a lively atmosphere in which seniors can gather for good food, good company, and great entertainment.

KWA offers five ethnic senior meal sites serving a total of nearly 300 Korean, Samoan, Vietnamese, Cambodian and international seniors each week. KWA provides limited transportation to and from the meal site, culturally catered food and entertainment, plus health check-ups and health education workshops.

KWA's registered Dietitian reviews and approves menus to meet USDA guidelines relative to authentic ethnic foods. KWA’s registered dietitian partners with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Senior Companions Program to offer this program.

Prevention of strokes, home safety, reducing sugar intake, maximizing immune status, activity tips for older adults, strength training and toning, heart disease, healthy holiday food and many other health topics are presented to participants at the meal site programs. 

One regular at one of the senior meal sites is a retired Army veteran. He says the program is more than just a meal and reduces his depression. “It gives me interaction with my peers, ways to socialize and play bingo and it gets me out of my house and keeps me from getting depressed. I can even dance there.”
